Gestures of Care is an ongoing workshop led by Studio Inscape (Eileen Stornebrink, Willie Vogel, Charlotte von Meijenfeldt). It focuses on the interaction of different human and non-human actors on specific urban contexts.
Each urban environment is made up of many human and non-human actors, from office workers to children to birds and trees. Inspired by Bruno Latour’s Actor-Network Theory, the workshop Gestures of Care aims to understand how actors connect and interact with one another in a specific setting
For the residency, Eileen Stornebrink (representing Studio Inscape) focused on different actors around the Boulevard Péripherique, including a “truck driver”, a “magpie”, a “chestnut tree” and a “homeless person”, among others. Each of the ten participants of the workshop represented an actor. One of the objectives of the workshop was to understand the movement, speed, direction and rhythm of each of the actors.
At the end of the workshop, the participants were asked to answer three reflective questions with text or an illustration. Based on the forms submitted, Eileen then analyzed how the participants interpreted their actors and in what way their actors relate to the ringway and each other.
